In our first lesson we decided to watch previous music videos from the pop genre. Whilst watching these I bullet pointed key things from the video and evaluated the what i thought was effective and particularly liked.
Beyonce - Run the world
What i particular liked about this music video was the dancing. All the dancers danced on the beat. This music video was very effective as the song was upbeat and the video needed the dancing to make it effective. Depending on our song we could potentially have a dance in our music video.
Nicki Minaj - Starships
The special effects in this music video make it very unique and stand out from others.
Rihanna - We found love
This music video used lots of very simple locations which made it effective. this suggested for our music video we could use simple locations instead of using complicated extravagant music videos that we would have trouble shooting as we may not have had the high tech advanced equipment.
But we found our real inspiration from Katy Perry’s song, TGIF.
The mise en scene was very effective as it portrayed Katy's character. Furthermore it was a narrative based music video which appealed to the target audience. The music was very catchy and the beat was lively. All these factors contributed to inspiring us on what type of music video we wanted.

This therefore helped us to understand what we needed in our music video as well. As a group we decided to set out the criteria of what we expected from the song before choosing, listed below:
Song Criteria:
- Lyrics - i.e. show one of Goodwin’s conventions of matching visuals to songs and to have meaningful lyrics
- Rhythm – To be fast paced
- Good Vocals – For the song to sound professional
- Key words – To be inspire an imaginative/creative/ unique visual
- Performance based music video
- Mise en scene - Emphasise the brand and image of our artist we were trying to create
Well done - although you could embed pictures and video to make your research clearer and more engaging.
