Potential Dance

After deciding we wanted dancing in our music video we found a contact who new a great group of dancers and asked them if they would like to star in our video. They agreed and decided to choreograph the dance. Later that week we received a video of the dance. Here is the dance.

What we really liked about the dance was it was fairly simple and dance actions move on the beat.

Ideas and Inspiration

I looked at Nicole Scherzinger's music video of Boomerang and really liked some of the shots. I thought that although the whole video only has her in it dancing it was quite effective, for example some of the shots were of her dancing just with a plain white background but the kaleidoscope effect used really added to it and made it look more interesting and is more likely to grab the audience's attention. Unlike a lot of the other music videos I have looked at for inspiration and ideas, this one didn't have a storyline which I also quite like about it because it is quite easy to watch without having to understand an underlying narrative but still grabs you with some of the effects used. We hope to use some of these ideas in our music video.

Ideas - Using CGI

Having watching mtv music videos, i came across 'Love the way you lie' by Rihanna and Eminem. I really liked how CGI was used and thought this would be intresting to include in our music video. I thought maybe we could have Maria singing with fire in the background which could be done using CGI as this may add more effect, especially as this is now more common to make music videos more appealing

A idea for a location

I was flicking over the music channels and Little mix' song 'Move' came on the TV, i sounded good so i continued to watch it. But in the video i particularly liked the part when the band was dancing on a stage. What made it stand out was the effect of the lighting on the stage. This gave me and idea for my music video and i thought maybe i could film one of the choruses on the stage with my artist and the dancers.
As we have a stage at school and lighting effects i thought this could be a possible location.

Here is the video clip.

Location ideas for our music video

  Train Station

This could be a possible location for our music video as it is unique. The idea came from watching the pussycat dolls video 'Wait a minute'.

Essence Sticks

Whilst sitting in the living room day dreaming i watched the essence stick burn and found it fascinating. I thought this may be effective to use at some point in the song i.e. the beginning.

Tunnel

The sound of the music gave me some inspiration and i though this would be a clever location as it suited the song. We think maybe we could have dancers here. Music videos from artists such as Beyonce and Cheryl Cole have also had scenes from their music video in a tunnel.

From 0.00 - 0.12 seconds of the song were the most interesting to me. Cheryl Cole's 'Call My Name' gave me a few ideas and thoughts. I really liked the shots of Cheryl where she is seen in the tunnel which gave me the idea of potential shots I could use in my own music video. I liked the lighting in the tunnel as it is very atmospheric. I also had a thought that I could maybe have some of my dance shots in a tunnel as this might look quite effective. furthermore the close up of her shoes whilst walking looked quite good as they were bright and contrasted with the dark location.

Target Audience

We believe our target audience for our music video would mainly be teenage girls and young women up to the early 20's. This is because the music is likely to be of interest to this particular people as they can relate to the music and are more likely to be fans.

Furthermore i also played the song to a group of people aged between the range 11 to 40 just to ensure i was targeting the right age group. From this is was reassured the target audience of my music video would be teenagers and women in their early 20's.

What I learnt from our audience expectations

From my audience expectations I received a variety of ideas. Some were mentioned more than other suggesting this was a common features. These responses were repeated and besides each one is written how I wish to/have already tried to include them in our music video.

  • Fast pasted editing - our song is quite upbeat so this we wish to incorporate to keep the viewers entertained and interested in the video.
  • Many different locations - We have found quite a few different locations and hope to use them in many ways.
  • Good choreography - We regularly keep in contact with our dancers where we have been reviewing the dance for our music video
  • Different lighting effects
  • Close ups - When we start story-boarding this is something we need to include especially as a lot of people mentioned this.
  • Appealing to audience - This task helped us to think of things that we may have missed out when planning, therefore we now wish to use certain things i.e.girly items of clothing or visuals to relate to our audience which is teenage to women in the early 20's.

Audience Expectations - Pop/Rnb Music Video

As part of my research we decided to film what people expect from a Pop/Rnb music video. This is important when making a music video so we know what to include in mine to meet the audiences criteria. The information gathered from this video helps me to eliminate features that we may or may not want to include. One that specifically stood out was the filming in many location. This is something we now wish to incorporate. I filmed responses using the camera and next lesson will upload them on to IMovie to edit.

Typical Synopsis

Ciara ' Im Out'

In this video a few simple locations are used. There is also a contrasted theme throughtout where a hip hop and girly element is protrayed. Dance is used as well which is a convention of most genres of music videos.
I like the fact a lot establsihing shots are used to sense the atmosphere and show connations of the lifestyle in the video. Another favourite i have was of the Ciara singing to the camera her use of Pink lipstick which helps to show a typical girl hence the colour juxtaposed with grills giving it that edgy look.
This video helps us reflect on ideas which we wish to incorporate in our music video.

Video Analysis - Ciara

 Ciara - Like a boy

  • Music videos demonstrate certain genre characteristics - performeance of the song is not on stage but a studio performance. It is lip synced throughout and they are wearing appropriate clothes for the genre of the music
  • There is a relationship between lyrics and visual - the song is about Ciara acting 'like a boy' and this is seen throughout where she dresses like a boy (in a suit) and sits like a boy at the beginning of the music video.
  • There is a relationship between music and visual - on average there are two beats per shot and generally they change on the beat, but some of the shots change much more quickly and some slower. There are about 150 shots in the whole music video and a huge range of different camera movements including panning, zoom and tracking.
  • The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist - this is evident in Ciara's "Like a Boy" as throughout the music video Ciara is seen in the majority of the shots which include long, mid and close-up shots.
  • The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work - in this music video, it is the objectification of males. This is seen when she grabs her crotch, she doesn't smile and the dance is more what you would expect from a male dancer.
  • There is frequent reference to the notion of 'looking' (screes within screes, filming, cameras) and particularly voyeuristic (pleasure through looking) treatment of the female body - this is opposite in Ciara's music video as she is seen to be objectifying the male rather than the female being objectified. We see him as passive with close-ups of her looking down on him.
  • There are often intertextual references-mostly to film, television and popular culture - usually women in this pop/ hip-hop genre are shown dancing provocatively where as Ciara has turned this round and her and her dancers are dancing like men.

I decided to analyse Ciara's "Like A Boy" music video to help me with my music video as it is similar to it. I used Andrew Goodwin's 7 characteristics of a music video to help me analyse it in greater detail. This has helped me to see that in my own music video I would like to have dance shots with a plain background as I really liked that. Also from a practical point of view when they were filming the dance shots, the camera was always still but the shots were edited at a fast pace to still make it effective.

9 Frame Analysis Beyonce - 'Love on top'

I decided to analyse the first 9 frame shots of Beyonce music video 'Love on Top'. Beyonce is someone who we would consider to be a similar artist to our one and therefore decided to look at the shots and mise en scene used in her music video and express the ideas it gave me for mine.

The video begins with a 1 second close up of a line of microphones, an artistic shot which symbolises the artist in concert. It is an unusual shot which has made us think about the original and 'different' shots that we could use in our own music video, playing with lighting and framing.

This establishing shot lasting 2 seconds creates and sense of enigma as the dancers have their backs to the camera and the audience is immediately interested to find out what they look like. They click their fingers to the beat portraying Andrew Goodwin's convention of matching the sound to the visuals.

This close-up of a dancer clicking his fingers once to the beat of the music uses an idea that we had thought of incorporating into our own video - a close-up of an accessory, in this case showing the bracelet. To appeal to our young female teenage audience our singer is going to be wearing signature jewellery which we plan to emphasis in close-ups.

This high angled shot lasts 1.5 seconds - perhaps a reference to the song title 'Love On Top'.

This mid-shot from yet another angle is a good example of a music video using a variety of shots of the same performers to keep the audience interested.

This wide shot is 4 seconds long which enables us to see all the performers turning round, this is what the audience has been waiting for. The shot shows all the performers but shows Beyonce as standing out because she is the only female and her costume and hat stands out from the rest of the performers. This is the effect we want to achieve with our artist who will be dressed differently to the dancers.

This is the point where Beyonce starts to sing and her dance moves are on the beat. It is another high angle shot and lasts 5 seconds.

This is a close-up of Beyonce's shoes which are appropriate for the genre of music and they link in well with the dance style she uses. For our music video we have also planned to include shots of the singers feet; however our singer will be wearing heels as it fits in more with our type of music.

This 2 second shot emphasises Beyonces love of fashion and style. As in the beginning she is hiding her face which creates a sense of expectation for the audience and a sense of playfulness which is carried on throughout the video - it makes us want to be Beyonce!

Award Winners - Superbass

For my award winners task i decided to analyse 'Super bass' by Nicki Minaj which won best hip hop music video in 2011

There are convention portrayed such as visuals matching actions, close ups of the artist, motifs and iconography and many more.

The theme is quite girly throughout!

Dance routines are also used which fit in with the convention. Strangley enough the video is random and doesn't tell a narrative making it more interesting and effective as it helps to convey different random things and life is random at times and not always one straight road ... this is learned through being a teenager.

Mise en scene is used effectively as the girls tend to have the same clothing and hair, however emphasis is put on to Nicki as she is in the middle and always in the limelight.

Close up shots of equipment

The video appeals to young girls as they are having fun, girly connations are shown throughout the use of the colour pink and stylish clothes. The pillow fight at the end also has reference to
Nicki's type of audience.

Inverted colours were used on the last verse which added a creative effect making the video more interesting.

The women in this song have power! The way Nicki seems like a boss shows the representation of women now compared to back in the 40's.

Choosing someone to be the artist

As we had to find someone to be the singer we asked around in our class and held auditions in our classroom, me and Vicky we the judges.

We had three volunteers:

- Hannah
- Maria
- Katherine

We asked them to sing a song and perform in character. We were not testing the vocals but looking for the qualities they possessed.

On a whole they were all very good. However Hannah was the best as she engaged well with us and was full of energy. Furthermore we had also used her in the lip syncing task, where she learnt the lyrics quickly and listened to instructions carefully. Therefore we need she would be reliable and a suitable candidate.

Lip Syncing Task

Here is the video to our lip syncing task.
Song: Girlfriend
Artisit: Avril Livene

Lip syncing Task - What we did

When we were first given the lip syncing task we were all very excited. We began discussing the genre and automatically knew we wanted a pop song as this would be fun to lip sync. In preparing for this we visited YouTube and chose the song ‘Girlfriend’ sang by Avril Livene.

When we were first given the lip syncing task we were all very excited. We began discussing the genre and automatically knew we wanted a pop song as this would be fun to lip sync. In preparing for this we visited YouTube and chose the song ‘Girlfriend’ sang by Avril Livene.

We choose this as the song was catchy and locations in the video seemed practical. We were able to use the school facilities i.e. the front of the school for the first shot and the dining room for the main part. Also the stage would be good to use for the part where Avril would sing with her band. This was perfect as we had a drum kit on stage! Furthermore we also noted the lighting was in the video was filmed in daylight so we could film in our lesson! Once all this was decided we asked girl from our year group to audition to be Avril. We got them to sing whilst we play the instrumental version. After an hour of auditioning we found the perfect girl to play Avril.

Whilst this was being arranged outside of lessons, in the lesson we decided to create storyboard with the relevant details to help us and avoid confusion on the day. We all were in charge of 5 seconds of the video as only 30seconds needed to be filmed. We thought this would be easy, however this was more difficult than we thought. You’ll be surprised how many times we had to watch the same 5 seconds to ensure we got the camera angle and shots correct as well as notice mise en scene, lighting and sound! This took a few lessons but by the end we were proud and believed the day would be a success due to us carefully planning.
Once this was done we had a meeting with our actress and informed her on what she had to do and when. The next step was to organise the music video i.e. booking relevant rooms, making sure our actress was available and everybody knew what they were doing.
We decided to have a dress rehearsal were we practiced shots and choose clothing as well as organising the extras! We practiced tricky parts such as keeping the actresses still whilst we moved camera to match shots.

However on the actual day of filming we were pleased with the mise en scene and lighting as well as the characters. We also believed we used the cameras well to create the shots we wanted.  We had to use the food tech room instead of the canteen due to problems arising. Secondly we forgot to conduct a risk assessment and there was an art exhibition going on in the hall where we were filming on the stage with the band and something broke. Overall the filming went well due to the careful storyboarding and we were very delighted with the actresses and extras cooperation.  This is an important point we are going to bare in mind when creating our music video.

The next lesson we imported the videos on to IMOVIE. We then edited them on Final Cut. Then we added the music to the videos. This was challenging however once completed we were thrilled to finally finish editing.

What we learn't

  • Planning is essential
  • Before filming ensure all locations are available and no last minute problems have arose
  • Ensure the artist knows the song very well including the breathes needed to be taken between lyrics.
  • Ensure the artist sings out loud and moves her lips in an over exaggerated way so its easier to lip sync the song.

Music Video Conventions - Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin believed there were 7 main conventions that were portrayed in music videos.

  • Music videos demonstrate certain genre characteristics
  • Relationship between lyrics and visual
  • Relationship between music and visuals
  • Close ups of the artist
  • Developed Motifs/ iconography
  • Different camera moves to portray different viewpoints
  • Intertextual references
We picked a few videos at random to see if his conventions applied

-    We found love – Rihanna

From looking at this we could see the link between the music and visuals as the music was upbeat and there were many short quick cuts. This was effective as it added to the effect of the video. This may be useful for us when we make our video as we could include edit our music video to match our fast upbeat song which could create a intresting impact on the audience.

-      Beat again –JLS

The main convention shown was the relationship between lyrics and visuals as actions were done i.e. the moving of hands near the chest to portray a heart beating.  We may use this in our music video to add emphasis on the lyrics and have our artist directly targeting the audience. For example when she our artist says 'I don't got many friends but i got you' - where she will point at the camera.

Singing in the Rain

Also in the video lyrics and being matched with visuals, 'singing in the rain'.

In our music video there is the lyric - "dancing in the rain" where we would have our character dancing in the rain, possibly swinging her umbrella as with the movie "Singing in the Rain". Furthermore this shows reference to the intertexual convention as well.
